14e Julibreen

14e Julibreen, also known as the 14th of July Glacier or the Fjortende Julibreen, is a beautiful glacier found in northwestern Spitsbergen.

Exploring 14e Julibreen

Some 16 km long and sporting a total area of about 127 km2, the glacier known as 14e Julibreen rests in Haakon VII Land in Spitsbergen. The glacier, which rises to more than 30 metres above the sea level, actually claims a whole host of names depending on the nationality of the person you ask:

  • Glacier du Quatorze Juillet
  • Fjortende Juli Bræ
  • Fjortende Juli bræen
  • Fjortende Juli Brae

All of the names, be they French, English, Norwegian, Danish, or what have you, celebrate the National Day of France which falls on the 14th of July.

The glacier itself is blue-white, in stark contrast to the rugged dark mountains that rise up on either side. As with all ending points of glaciers, ice is calved here. These ice bergs and smaller floating chunks of ice become haul-out points for animals like seals and Polar bears, and play host to teems of birds with Kittiwakes being especially predominant in the area.
