Alkefjellet (literally: the Mountain of the Guillemots) is the most famous cliff of the Spitsbergen archipelago. It is a bird cliff facing towards Hinlopenstretet. The name matches perfectly as 60,000 pairs of Brünnich’s Guillemot are breeding here. Even without the Brünnich’s Guillemot, Alkefjellet would be well worth a visit. The Brünnich’s Guillemot are obviously the main attraction, which never fails to impress the lucky ones who can see this miracle of nature.
